FAQ
Not sure what you need? No problem.
I’ve answered the most common questions below — but if you’d rather just ask, drop me a message and I’ll point you in the right direction.
PAT testing (Portable Appliance Testing) is the process of checking electrical appliances to ensure they are safe to use. It involves both visual inspections and electrical tests to identify faults and reduce the risk of hazards.
PAT testing itself isn’t strictly a legal requirement, but UK regulations state that all electrical equipment must be maintained in a safe condition. PAT testing is the most widely accepted way to demonstrate compliance.
This depends on the type of equipment and environment:
Offices: every 1–2 years
Construction sites: every 3 months
Rental properties: typically between tenancies or annually
I can advise on the most appropriate schedule for your setup.
I test a wide range of equipment, including:
Kettles, microwaves, fridges
Computers, monitors, printers
Power tools and extension leads
Hairdressing and salon equipment
Industrial and workplace equipment
Yes — I also carry out fixed appliance testing.
Unlike many PAT testers who only handle plug-in items, I can test fixed appliances such as:
Hand dryers
Wall-mounted heaters
Hard-wired kitchen equipment
This means you can have everything tested in one visit without needing multiple contractors.
No — I aim to keep disruption to a minimum. Testing is quick and can usually be carried out during normal working hours, or arranged around your schedule if needed.
The time required depends on the number of items being tested. As a rough guide:
- 50 items: around 1–2 hours
- 100 items: around half a day
I’ll always provide a clear estimate beforehand.
The cost depends on a few factors, including:
- Number of items
- Type of equipment
- Location and access
I provide quick, no-obligation quotes tailored to your needs — just get in touch and I’ll get back to you promptly.
After testing, you’ll receive:
- Pass/fail labels on each item
- A detailed test report
- A certificate for your records
This helps demonstrate compliance for insurance and safety purposes.
If an appliance fails:
- I’ll clearly explain the issue
- Minor faults (such as plugs or fuses) can often be fixed on-site
- Unsafe items will be labelled and removed from use
Just ensure appliances are accessible and, where possible, plugged in. I’ll take care of the rest.
